What's Goin' On At CityCanine

October 2011

The long hot summer is really over...and that means it's time for competition at CityCanine. In recent years, that has meant Rally and Obedience Competition; this year the name of the game is Agility! We're not totally out of Rally - Phil and his Standard Poodle Louie are readying for the Farm and Ranch show in a couple of weeks. But...in agility...

...Jeffrey and Rusty participated in their first ever Agility show - held in Crosby - last weekend. The first day (Saturday) was all about nerves. Still, Jeffrey had two good runs, one in Jumpers with Weaves, and the other in Standard Agility. You can see these runs in the videos below. Both were very close to being qualifying runs, but alas...

Sunday was better. In Jumpers with Weaves, Jeffrey had no errors, scoring a perfect 100 and earning the Blue Ribbon! Then later in the day, on the Standard Agility course, he had a 90, taking the Red Ribbon (second). Unfortunately, there's no video from Sunday, because Dan had to stay back at the home base to teach class!

March 2011

Meet Squirrel! The newest member of the CityCanine agility team...he's a black and white Border Collie, really (really!) high drive, acquired from the working lines of B & B Border Collies in Zavalla, TX. Here's a little video of Squirrel going after a tug toy:

The new boat gets wet! Rusty (and Jeffrey, and Dan)took off for Lake Somerville, to see if the new boat would hold up. It works! A 3-mile paddle across the lake and back meant Jeffrey and Dan were really tired of paddling, and Rusty really worn out from supervising...

February 2011

Rusty takes a day off...after a very busy year of titles and certifications, Rusty has decided to take a break! In one year, Rusty has earned a Canine Good Citizen certification, Rally Novice, Advanced, and Excellent titles, Novice Obedience Title, and has been certified as a Delta Society Therapy Dog! Plus (!) finished three levels of Agility training at Flashpaws. Whew!, ...so he felt he had earned a bigger boat and is getting ready to take it out on Lake Somerville! Back to competition in a few months...

January 2011

Buddy gets his title! We went to the Beaumont show last weekend - sponsored by the German Shepherd Dog Club of Beaumont - and the Old Dog qualified both days, earning his Companion Dog obedience title...

December 2010

So we headed up north to the Conroe Kennel Club show last weekend...Jeffrey took Rusty to finish the Companion Dog Title, Dan took the old dog - Buddy - to start the Companion Dog Title. Steve went with Gonzo for his first shot at Rally Novice, and Grant went with Remy to complete the Rally Excellent Title.

How'd it go? Great! Jeffrey (with Rusty) finished the CD with a Red Ribbon (second place) on Saturday and another Red on Sunday. While the old dog didn't qualify on Saturday, he did fine Sunday with a Yellow Ribbon (third). Grant took the Blue both of his days to complete Remy's RE Title, and Steve had a great first show with a Red on Saturday and a Blue on Sunday!

November 2010

Busy, busy weekend...the CityCanine team went to the West Houston and Cypress Creek Dog Shows held at the Farm and Ranch Showgrounds out on Highway 6 at Bear Creek. Same shows as last year (read the the bottom of this page for THE RESULTS from last year), with virtually the same outcome...Ribbons!

New titles were earned by Jeffrey (handling Rusty), Grant (handling Remy), Ingrid (handling Duds), and Meghan (handling Bojangles). There were no non-qualifying scores, with everyone earning multiple ribbons for high placements! (If you're interested in training to show in AKC Rally, give Jeffrey a call at 832-298-3105.)

Here's a video of the show highlights:

October 2010

So it was off to the show again last weekend! We trekked up to Humble for the two-day Greater Humble Area Kennel Club show - and had great results! After completing the Rally Novice (RN) title with Rusty on Memorial Day, Jeffrey and Rusty are now in pursuit of the Rally Advanced (RA) title. With a good run Saturday morning, Rusty scored a 96 out of 100 and took the Red (second place) ribbon. Another go at it on Sunday morning yielded a 94 and the Yellow (third place) ribbon. So Rusty has two legs out of three complete in pursuit of his second title...one more to go at Farm and Ranch in November!

Here's a video of Rusty's first leg on Saturday...

And here's his run on Sunday...

Stubby, our young Black Lab, had a good day Saturday, taking the Yellow Ribbon and completing the Companion Dog Title he started last May at the Galveston show. Not sure what our next step is, probably the Rally Advanced title at Farm and Ranch!

September 2010

What a Food Drive!

If you didn't know, CityCanine partners with the aniMeals Pet Food program, run by Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston - the same folks who run the well-known Meals On Wheels program. Twice a year, aniMeals and its partners conduct a pet food drive to raise dog food and cat food for Meals on Wheels folks. We would like to say "THANKS!" to all of our clients who dropped off food...we had a carload to take down to the main office: over 600 pounds of dog food, plus about 150 pounds of cat food! Again, thank you for your support...you care, and it shows!

Competition Updates

May & June 2010

We took our current competing dogs to the Galveston County Dog Show over the Memorial Day weekend, and they did quite well! Jeffrey's 9-month old Border Collie, Rusty, completed his Rally Novice title, earning the only perfect score on day one of the show (and the Blue Ribbon), and 3rd place on the second day. Dan's young lab, Stubby (15 months old at show time), went to the show and competed in the first level of Obedience, trying for the Companion Dog title. We had good days on Saturday and Sunday, taking the Blue (1st) and the Red (2nd) ribbons, respectively. Alas, the third day wasn't to be, as Stubby couldn't deal with the long flowing skirt the judge was wearing (it really spooked him!), and got a NQ. So we have one more leg to go to earn that title...we'll be seeking that leg this fall, after doing some proofing work with strangers wearing all kinds of clothes!

New Puppy Joins CityCanine Team

Meet Rustlin' Rusty! Jeffrey recently selected - and has already started training - a new Border Collie pup...he's now 7 months old and showing great aptitude and energy with both traditional obedience tasks and flying disc work. His breeder is B & B Border Collies, located in Zavalla, Texas...they have great working dogs up there - check them out!
